7 Ways Speakers Use QR Codes Wrong

QR codes on presentation slides have become the default way speakers share resources. A well-placed code turns every person in the room into a potential subscriber and long-term follower. 1. Making the code too small

This is the most common mistake, and it has the clearest fix. Speakers add a QR code to a corner of a slide, size it as a modest inset, then wonder why the scan rate is low.

QR codes need to be large enough to scan reliably from the back of the room. In a conference breakout session, the code should occupy at least 25% of the slide area. In a main stage or ballroom setting, closer to 35–40%.

5. Not prompting from stage

A QR code on a slide is passive. Attendees notice it, or they're writing notes, looking at you, or reviewing something on their own device.

The difference between a 5% scan rate and a 30% scan rate is usually one thing: the speaker actively told people to scan.

Your on-stage prompt is your conversion mechanism. Something like:

"Scan this right now — you'll have everything from today's talk in your pocket before you leave the room. I'll give you thirty seconds."

Then stop talking, keep the slide up, and let people scan. The pause does not feel awkward to the audience — they're on their phones. It only feels awkward to you.

6. Using a code that leads to a login wall or broken page

  • Does the page load in under 3 seconds?
  • Does it load without requiring a login?
  • Does it display correctly on mobile?
  • Is the URL live and not returning a 404?

7. Never updating the destination
